The routine was standard, it was a Friday and the group of five hungry and thirsty guys headed for the Daniel O’Conner Pub in North Adelaide. This pub already has a great reputation and we have visited it many times before for lunches and dinners, its Irish charm is truly genuine and the bartender’s accent is straight out of Dublin.
I ordered a Daniel O’Conner Burger and a pint of Stella, the Stella was crisp and great quality, as is all the beer here and we headed into the back of the pub and found a comfortable table and awaited our food. After 25 minutes of waiting we were finishing our pints and starting to get slightly frustrated that our meals had not arrived but as we were about to complain the food arrived.
The Burger was well presented and delivered on a rectangular platter that looked impressive, the chips were done in a delicious batter and were crisp and perfectly cooked, I would almost give them a perfect score they were so delicious. There was a small dipping bowl of a garlic/mayo dipping sauce on the plate also that was tasty and not to oily. The burger itself was very large and filled with salad, bacon, egg, chutney and the meat patty was a gourmet creation, not your standard 5 mm cheap pub burger patty. The flavours of the burger were excellent, you really couldn’t ask for a better pub burger. The meal did not come with a side salad but there was so much food between the chips and the burger you really didn’t need any. About the only thing we could find to complain about was that it took a bit long for them to bring the food out.
To summarise…. the Daniel O’Conner is a great Pub and in the world of Adelaide pubs really should have a higher status, of the five meals that were ordered by the burger boys, all were more than happy to say it was the best pub meal they had eaten in ages, which is something that has never happened before in all the pubs we have been to. The Daniel O’Conner is a jewel in the rough and a counter meal their will not disappoint, just don’t tell too many people because we like it the way it is.
