Another Friday and another pub presents itself. Todays challenge was the Alma Tavern. The five guys headed into the front bar around 12.00 pm and with it been 40′C outside there was really only one thing on our minds…..beer. After quenching my thirst with a Pure Blonde (i keep forgetting that i don’t really like this low carb light beer and if i wanted to drink something that tastes like water, i will drink….water) we checked out the menu and i felt it my team obligation to order the Alma Burger.
After a 20 minute wait and a wander to the bar to get a real beer our food arrived. All five meals were delivered at the same time which seems to be a bit of a challenge in Adelaide Pubs these days and a big tick for the Alma. Onto the meal, the presentation was very “pub food”, simple and no fuss. The chips were well cooked and crunchy with good flavour and a nice serving. The burger was stacked well and looked impressive on the plate, i was disappointed with the bun, it was a cheap Macca’s type and its not hard to use a quality bun. The burger contained egg, bacon, a bit of salad, sauce and the meat pattie, the meat was definitely a bit average, it wasn’t bad, but it had no flavour and tasted like it got delivered in a box of 100 frozen. One of the other guys in the group actually removed the meat and just ate the bun.
Overall, the burger meal was borderline average, it certainly wasn’t bad, but there was nothing to write home to grandma about. There are a lot of pubs doing great counter meals these days and you just can’t afford to be average. I guess the burger was cheap at $10.90 but at that price i would certainly rather go to the Lion or the Oxford.
