I often decline the invite from fellow work mates to travel to the closest pub to us the Sussex as I’ve had so many average meals there. This time the invite was for someone’s 40th Birthday, so I couldn’t really get out of it.
The Sussex has recently been renovated and is almost complete. The renovations on the inside look quite good, I was also hoping that they had renovated the beer lines and the kitchen (including the
chefs).
Ordering time, I thought I’d try something different, but simple so it couldn’t be stuffed up. I went for the Spaghetti Carbonara for $13.90.
Should I give the beer lines a try? Yeah might as well, Stella on tap for $5.
Now for the taste test…. mmm yep, should have stuck with a bottle. Not terrible but not fresh and crisp tasting.
15 to 20 minutes later our meals arrived. My first impressions…. my spaghetti is drowning. There was so much cream in this dish (you can tell by the reflection it gave when the flash on the camera fired), they must have had a cow in the kitchen! There also wasn’t much else in the bowl other than the spaghetti. Only a small amount of ham and a mushroom or two. I dug in, and it actually tasted fine, there just wasn’t much too it. As I was hungry I ate most of the bowl leaving some of the cream sauce in the bottom of course. I soon regretted this as it was obviously too much cream for my system and I
felt a bit ill.
One of the other guys just had a bruschette for a main and enjoyed it. The guy next to me had the chicken burger and rated it as average. I did steal one of his chips though and that wasn’t too bad. Crisper than the last chip I had there many months ago.
Anyway it seems the renovations at the Sussex were in the look of the place only and the food is still of a very average standard.
My advise, drive past. North Adelaide is very close.
