Beer and Burger

The British Hotel is one of those pubs that you often forget that it exists due to its location. It’s so close to Melbourne Street, but its just around the corner and out of the way enough to be bypassed.
Today I remembered it and I was glad I did.

After arriving and walking straight past the front bar where we should have stopped we arrived out the back of the pub to their restaurant area. After being kindly greeted and seated, we viewed the menu’s…. mmm priceee. This was obviously not the bar menu. We figured out that we’d gone too far and headed back into the front bar. Ah that’s better, most things under $15. I decided upon the beef burger ($12.90) and a pint of Coopers Pale Ale ($5.20).

The beer was fantastic clean and fresh like a good pale should be. The other guys sampled the Asahi and the kilkenny and had nothing but praise also.

About 12 minutes later our meals arrived. First impression was: That’s a tall burger! I did my best to squeeze the burger and get it in my mouth. Damn! Great burger! Really good tasting patty packed with herbs and cooked to perfection. The bacon egg and cheese on the burger where also great. The only tiny let down was in the end there was still some bun left over as it is such a thick doughy roll.
The chips on the side were fantastic. They were crisp and very hot, as in very very fresh hot. Excellent work from the ladies in the kitchen. In fact there was only one man I saw working in the whole pub / restaurant. Looks like the women know what they are doing! All the male pub staff and chefs are going to have to lift their games to keep up with this standard.

A couple of the other guys that came to lunch ordered the steak sandwich. They were most impressed also.

All in all I’m looking forward to going back again real soon. In fact just a couple hours later looking at the picture of my burger I found my self wanting another!
