The guys had only ever been for a beer at the Sceptre, so it was time to test out the meals.
We arrived just after 12 and found plenty of free tables so we headed to the bar to view the menu. The friendly bar staff
notified us of the Burger and Beer special of $13.50. Sold, sounded good to me. The other guys ordered a mix of the Flathead and Chips and the pasta of the day. The beer with the burger deal was a pint of Stella. It tasted pretty good, just a slight tang of draught in it for some reason.
We sat out the front of the pub on the pavement which was quite nice. The noise of the King William Street traffic wasn’t to bad. After 20 minutes or so of enjoying our beers our meals arrived.
From looks alone things looked quite impressive, although I was a little jealous of the fish when I saw that it was quite a decent size and I love flathead!
The chips were hot and very crisp. Quite tasty all round. The burger’s sauce was in a little side dish, that, I’m not really a fan of. It came in useful a few times when I dipped my chips in it, but before I started on my burger I just threw the whole lot on.
The burger pattie was smallish and round but thick. Once I got to it, it tasted great and w
as filled with some herbs that gave it a good flavour. The main problem I had was that the burger roll was a long oval shape and with the pattie being round I got a whole lot of nothing but bread for a lot of the time. The bread itself wasn’t too bad, but hadn’t been toasted enough and became soft and fell apart quite quickly. Also on the burger was tomato, lettuce, cheese and bacon. It had that average tasteless bacon on it too, in fact other than the pattie the whole burger was a bit bland, but still enjoyable. In the end I left most of the surroundings and just finished off the meat.![]()
The other guys enjoyed the fish a lot. It was a good size, well cooked and fresh. Next time I’ll go for that definitely.
The pasta of the day (salmon) was also rated well.
Overall the Crown & Sceptre is a pretty good pub. Inside the bar has a cool and funky theme, the staff are great and the beer is decent. In general the food is pretty good, and I’d be more than happy to eat there again. I’m not sure if I’d order the burger though.
