Exeter Beef Burger

Well we recently visited the Austral, so it was time to visit the across the road neighbour. I don’t know about you but, with the Exeter’s grungee styling, its never looked all that inviting to me as a place to eat. It’s also not a Exeter Menuplace people have come up to me an said “for a great meal go try out the Exeter”, so my expectations were not high.
But as I’m one not to judge a book by its cover, it was time to get some Exeter food into me.
The menu exists on a black board only. Sorry about my blurry pic but there were many hungry patrons surrounding me and the one and only black board.Exeter Eating Area

I ordered the burger as I often do ;). There was a choice between beef and tofu and another choice of Chilli tomato sauce or mushroom sauce. I went the tomato. ($9.90)
We sat out in the beer garden area. Not really much of a garden, more a table and chair area with a few pot plants.Exeter Beer
The staff were friendly and gave us a basket of bread and butter. I like that at a pub. A fly decided to die on one of the bread and butter plates. Not really the Exeter’s fault that one, but something the staff should keep and eye out for.

For beer I went for a Pint of Coopers Pale Ale. ($5) Pretty good out of the tap… perhaps a tiny bit flat.

Our meals arrived after 20 minutes or so. They came out in a rather staggered fashion though. StrangelyExeter Steak enough the 2 steaks came out first and then the rest of us waited several minutes before the rest of the meals slowly appeared.
First impressions of my meal. Looked ok… it had a large piece of green stuff oozing from it though… The chips were not hot, just warm and little bit soft. I removed the green stuff as I do and got into the burger. From the first bite I knew that this burger was nothing special. The almost untoasted Exeter Burger Mushroom Saucewholemeal bun was very ordinary. It gave the burger a “mums sandwich” kind of taste. The meat had a bit of flavour but was soft and became bland fast. I asked around the table to the others who ordered the mushroom sauce on their burgers… Unimpressed all around. What about the fish and chips? Yeah its ok. What about the steaks? I got one average and one yeah not too bad. So there youExeter Fish and Chips have it.

Overall I thought the Exeter should be kept for drinking purposes only and thats how it turned out… sometimes I guess you can read a book by its cover.

The Exeter has some of the best pub food on that side of town, you hayseed. And a fly died on your plate. Do you want the staff hovering around inspecting side dishes for dead insects? Where did you think you were, the Waldorf-Astoria? Should someone who “removes the green stuff” really be reviewing food? If you take all the vegetables out so all you’re left with is meat, cheese, sauce and bread you can hardly complain if the result is bland. YOU’RE bland. And your review stinks.

Dear Exeter lover, please don’t take this review to heart.. it is just a random review and one persons opinion. I’m sure you have had plenty of great meals at the Exeter and will continue to do so. Just in comparison to many of the pubs we had been to on that day the exeter food was below average.
By the way I only ever remove the lettuce from burgers as we all know what that tastes like, i leave the rest in there.. And the dead fly came out on the plate.. it didn’t die on the table.
Just telling it like it is. Maybe you should get out more and see what your missing….

I agree with JPWM, this is a really unfair review. Correct me if i’m wrong but this site is to review pub food, which should be about a good feed, value for money, no pretentiousness etc etc- this is exactly what you will get at the Exeter. Nobody would ever suggest it is 5 star dining (and no, if your long lost brother was coming from the other side of the world it wouldnt be the first place you would take him) but for the price you pay the food is excellent, especially compared to the overpriced and undersized fare on offer at the nearby Austral and Stag hotels. The staff of the office in which I head to the EX almost every friday lunch and wihout exception we have always left very satisfied. So get off your high horse and see the place for what it is- a great honest pub (with no pokies!!!).
