It was a Saturday arvo and myself and Dan had just been for a refreshing dip, body boarding in the Southern Ocean. So of course we had a hankering for some warm food and refreshing beer. We stopped
at the first pub we came across which happened to be the Royal Family Hotel in Port Elliot. We got there just after 2 p.m. and checked that they were still serving food and we were in luck - just no steaks, they told us, as the grill was off. A quick glance to the wall menu that was advertising $4 pints of Coopers Pale Ale grabbed our attention. Two Please! Beer always tastes better in the country for some reason.
To the menu. After talking myself out of several of their inviting seafood dishes I decided on the beef schnitzel parmigiana. $12. Be careful though as the cash register tells the bar staff its $13 but the menu says $12.![]()
Dan put on a couple of bets on the horses while I watched a bit of Saturday afternoon footy. No more than 10 minutes or so later lunch was served.
The chips were good - crisp, salty and hot; the way they should be. The side salad looked good if you’re into that sort of thing; but as usual I moved mine to the side. The schnitzel was a decent size as it covered the
length of the plate. The cheese on top was melted to perfection. The advantage of coming late and getting the chef to yourself, I guess. Cutting into it I was a little disappointed with the thickness. I always expect bigger, thicker meat in the country; but this unfortunately didn’t deliver - but it tasted pretty good. The batter wasn’t anything special but it was cooked well and filled a hole.
Overall the Royal Family Hotel was an enjoyable country stop. The beer was good and cheap and the meals are enjoyable and certainly do the job.
