It’s unusual for me to review two meals at once, but I went out to lunch with my wife and as many men know this can lead to many eating opportunities – but more of that later.
It was Sunday lunch time and the place was starting to get busy. The Broadway is known for its seafood meals so I thought I’d have the pasta of the day…. Well my wife ordered the salt and pepper squid so I knew I’d get a piece or two.
The menu is split into the more ‘lar-d-dar’ main menu and the cheaper pub menu on the wall. My pasta was from the cheaper wall menu and was one of the specials. It was cheese, cream and bacon $14.90. My wifes squid was from the main menu and was $18. I didn’t actually have a beer this time which could be a first. A big Saturday
night slowed me down.
I ordered a glass of water which was promptly forgotten as free drinks are not passed through the system. I got up and got one from the bar after waiting 5 minutes and seeing everyone elses drink arrive. The bar attendant did apologise which was nice and she admitted that she was new.
I was a bit peckish while waiting for our meals so I wandered over to the salad bar area. It didn’t look to
bad with some interesting hot dishes in there too. I just went for some bread rolls though which were quite nice.
15 or 20 minutes later our meals all came out at about the same time which was good to see. My pasta was well presented with a nice garnish and side of cheese. This pasta was very cheesy and very creamy, it was almost a bit much. It kind of tasted like a packet mix macaroni and cheese I once had. There
wasn’t much else to it, it just had a fair bit of bacon stirred through it – still, enjoyable though.
My wife got her salt and pepper squid and had two small pieces and that was it! The problem she had with it was that it was all extremely greasy. If you click on the picture and look at it full size you can see the flash reflecting from the food. I suppose you have to expect a little of that from deep fried food, but this was just a bit too much for the wife. So, I got to enjoy my second meal for the day and I found it quite enjoyable. Yes it was a bit oilier than usual but the squid itself was fresh and tender. The chips were also a bit too greasy and weren’t very crisp as a result.
The others on our table had the Roast of the Day ($14) and the Seafood Basket ($20). The roast was described as a normal decent roast and the seafood basket was once again a little on the greasy side but still quite enjoyable.
So there you have it, the pub with the name for decent seafood fed everyone decently except for my anti oil wife who went a little hungry. Overall I’ve had less greasy and better squid at places like the Earl of Leicester and the Daniel O’Connell and it costs a bit less there too. The Broadway is by no means bad at all, its just not brilliant and lacks value for money.
