It was a
Father’s Day trip up to the Barossa Valley that brought us to the Tanunda Hotel for lunch on a beautiful spring day. Having visited several wineries before lunch I was quite peckish and a bit tipsy. We had reserved a table but people were starting to leave when we got there (about 1:30 pm), so finding a nice spot in the sun wasn’t a problem.
After perusing the menu, we headed to the bar to order our meals and drinks. There were five of us and the bill
for a round of drinks, entrees and mains came to $102. Not too bad. The beer on tap was good, can’t say I remember what it was though….. I think maybe a Toohey’s Extra Dry or Coopers Lager.
For food I decided upon the Barossa Beef Burger ($12). I also ordered a serve of garlic bread ($4) that took all of about 5 minutes to come out. Very nice, moist and crisp all the way through.
Our main meals came out about 15 or 20 minutes later. I must say everything looked really good and really fresh just like it should in the country. I got stuck into my ‘Fat Chips’ as they are called and they were very good. Hot, crisp and well salted; a damn good all round chip. As for my burger - sporting cheese, bacon, egg, the green stuff, tomato and that country beef … Mmmm, that’s a damn good burger.
I could taste everything in it, fresh and flavoursome the whole way through. The meat was rolled in plenty of herbs and spices and was a delight. Great burger.
As I was dining with family, taste tests and left overs came at me from all directions. First up I got a couple of mouthfuls of the battered flathead. Now the Barossa Valley is not really close to salt water, but
this fish was fresh and melted in my mouth. Awesome. Next I had some un-sauced chicken schnitzel. Damn this was good. It was real unprocessed tasty, fresh, juicy chicken with a great crispy crumbed coating. Amazing, no sauce was even needed, just a little salt. Last and least, was my wife’s Vegetarian Lasagna. This was probably my least favourite, but don’t get me wrong it was still very
flavoursome and fresh and tasted very good.
Overall a good day out was had by all. The Tanunda Hotel is a definite lunch stop while your gallivanting around the Barossa Valley soaking up the wines.
