For my Mother in-law’s Birthday this year she decided upon a nice trip to the German country town of Hahndorf. I’d heard many good things about the German Arms and was keen to taste the cuisine.
The pub is nicely decorated in its German theme and has a live piano player going non stop for that classy touch.
I decided on a nice German beer… Becks. And it was about as good as Becks gets, very nice.
To the menu, we decided on some starters, some garlic bread and some dips. These arrived 10 minutes or so after ordering. The garlic bread was one sided, but on a very thick soft and doughy bread, quite nice. The dips were also very nice with many different things to dip. A small let down with this was the fact that a piece of cheese plastic was in one of the dips and that part of an olive pip was still in one of the halved olives…. Both made it to a mouth, the 2nd one hurt a tooth a bit.

For mains I ordered the Beef Schnitzel Parmigiana ($16.90). I had heard rumors of over sized German meats up this way so I wanted to inspect for myself.
The meals arrived in good time as I was onto my second Becks. Size wise the schnitzel was an immediate let down. Lucky for me and the schnitzel it tasted great and got thicker and thicker as I went on.
The chips on the other hand were once again in my most hated position…. under the schnitzel! Why oh why do they do that to the chips? As you can imagine most of my chips were soggy. A few around the edge were a fair bit better. I also noticed on the way out they have a large chip warming section which wouldn’t help the crispiness factor also.

Of the 6 of us that ate, all but one thought our meals were good. I tried my father in-laws garlic prawns and they were great.

Overall this is a pretty good place. The food was all very nice, the beer was excellent and the atmosphere is great.
The only small let downs were the chips, the incidents with the dips and perhaps the price of some of the meals is approaching the higher class restaurant area. I’d go again though.
