Friday lunchtime, time for a Burger and a beer or 3.
First impressions….. easy parking, busy, but not too crowded and about 10 or more beers on tap!!! Whoo Hoo!
I purchased the Arab Beef Burger ($10.90) and a pint of Stella ($6.50). Great tasting beer, very clean lines at this place!
After moving over to the main outdoor dining area which is on the road side out the front. I settled into the comfy cane furniture and began enjoying my beer.
The burger arrived in about 10 minutes…. just about perfect… just enough time to unwind and have a drink, but not so long that your hanging for food.
First impressions…. nice height, large lettuce and not heaps of chips… I’m not a fan of lettuce so to have the half an ice burg in one clump that was easy to remove was convienient. The Burger was made up of a tasty tomato chutney, lettuce, tomato, beetroot, onion, cheese, bacon and of course the beef pattie.
Meat wise the burger kind of fell to bits… wasn’t held together too well… not much flavour wise either… a bit bland, unyet, still enjoyable as a package.

The chips tasted like a kiosk at the beach that served not crisp, but not too soggy chips that I ate at when I was a child… so they had nostalgic value for me… but in general, not the greatest chips in the world.

After eating we stayed around for another 40 mins or so to get some more of that great tasting beer into us.

Overall, great friendly service, good location and atmosphere, great beers, and an average burger and chips.
I’d go again, but not that often (mainly to drink ).

The Gang of Five rolled up to The Arab Steed at twelve-thirty on a Friday lunchtime. As you would imagine, there was a fair crush factor happening, but the friendly Rachel did the chair and table shuffle to accommodate us on one table. Somebody has actually been training their staff. Good signs already. We ordered excellent clear beers at the lounge bar counter and waited in our comfy chairs outside for the meal. Ten minutes – yes, ten minutes – later our meals came out. Heated plates. Nice.

I had the Cajun Chicken Burger. A buck extra. The bun was fresh and nicely toasted, although didn’t pass the two hand crush test. Disintegration set in pretty early. Inside was an excellent slab of bacon, the usual Iceberg lettuce with bottle mayo, and three slabs of grilled chicken. Got to say this was a good start, and to be fair the chicken had been grilled just so. Still juicy. But guys, when you’re ordering Cajun, you’re looking for – what? Hot and spicy? Sorry, no go on either count. Same went for the other meals evidently. Everything handled well, except the seasoning, which was, well, not there. Maybe the Anglos in Hutt street like it that way, and if that’s your thing, this venerable old pub will suit you fine.

Bottom line, classy but plain.
